Mark Ruffalo Real Life Hero

He is an Oscar nominated actor, filmmaker and political activist. He is one of the most respected performers in Hollywood, famous for roles in movies like 'Foxcatcher', 'Zodiac' and the 'Now You See Me' movies. His name is Mark Ruffalo and he has just earned a whole new generation of fans by starring as Bruce Banner AKA The Incredible Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is currently reprising the role in 'Thor: Ragnarok' and is set to continue in the next two 'Avengers' movies. Mark Ruffalo has made a name for himself defeating super villains and smashing inter galactic baddies. However, it is not widely known that the cinematic superhero is living with his own battles off screen, which has affected his hearing, and it is something he must live with day to day.

In 2002, Mark Ruffalo was lined up to play Mel Gibson's brother in the science fiction thriller 'Signs'. It was the latest film by 'Sixth Sense' director M. Night Shyamalan. However, the actor had to drop out, to be replaced by Jaoquin Pheonix due to a health issue. Ruffalo was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma. A type of brain tumour which effects between six and nine million people in America annually, amounting to around 2,000 and 3,000 cases. There are various symptoms of an acoustic neuroma. They range from sudden hearing loss, inner ear damage, tinnitus, headaches, balance problems and pressure in the ear, among other signs. Mark Ruffalo underwent surgery and fortunately the tumour turned out to be benign, but, following the operation, he was left with temporary partial facial paralysis. He eventually recovered from the paralysis, but the tumour left him deaf in his left ear. However, he has learned to live with his condition and is going on from strength to strength.

He has received Academy Award nominations and is starring in the biggest box office blockbusters around. His name has been linked with many exciting projects. These include a remake of the classic TV series 'Columbo', where he will take on the role played by the legendary Peter Falk. He was coincidently another actor who overcame a disability to succeed. Falk had his right eye removed at the age of three, due to a tumour. It didn't stop him becoming the biggest TV star in the world in the 70s and the winner of four Emmys, the television Oscar.

Experience 'The Force' With A Hearing Loop System

The Christmas season is fast approaching, and for many people, this includes a family day out to the cinema. December sees the long-anticipated release of the new Star Wars film 'The Last Jedi'. However, this can be difficult and frustrating for individuals suffering from hearing loss who must wear a digital hearing aid. But, there is an exciting new technological breakthrough designed to enhance the movie-going experience for people living with hearing loss. It is called a hearing loop system and it can change how sufferers enjoy the movies.

The hearing loop system can help people who rely on a hearing aid to watch the film. This is with a microphone which picks up the spoken word. It is then transported to a wire, which covers the entire perimeter of the auditorium by way of an amplifier. The line, otherwise known as the induction loop, serves the same purposes as a transmitter or an antenna. The hearing loop system allows sound to be transported straight to a person's hearing aid, so that they can hear the movie. It has been reported that the popular cinema chain Odeon will be fitting their cinemas across the country with the newest induction loop systems. It is an amazing discovery, which allow sufferers to listen to the movie through their hearing aid.

It is another example of how an excellent hearing aid solution can enhance and improve the lives of people living with hearing loss. We at Darroch Hearing have offer the most extensive choice of top quality hearing aids. They are a force to be reckoned with!

3 Ways To Help A Loved One Who Has A Hearing Loss

It’s not uncommon for someone with a hearing loss to be in denial. Many times they either don’t acknowledge their own hearing loss or they simply don’t realize it.

It’s not unusual for family and friends to notice a hearing loss first.

It’s not always easy to be the one to point out a hearing loss to a loved one but if you can muster up the courage, you will be doing them a favor in the long run.

If you find yourself in this situation and you’re trying to find the right way to point out a hearing loss to your loved one, these tips may help:

1. Since many people don’t want to acknowledge their hearing loss due to the fear of “looking old” with a hearing aid, it may lessen their fears somewhat if they understand just how small some new hearing aids can be. Today there are hearing aids that are virtually invisible.

By explaining that there are many options in hearing aids your loved one may not be quite so reluctant to acknowledge their hearing loss.

2. When it comes time for “the conversation” try to find a time when the two of you are calm and relaxed. While you might be frustrated with having to continually repeat yourself or have to endure painfully loud t.v. viewing, it’s important that you put that aside when talking with your loved one to avoid confrontation.

3. Try to be a helping hand during the whole process. Your loved one will likely be a little nervous but having your support will help. And don’t forget, I am always here to help with the whole process, from start to finish.

Your loved one is missing out by not being able to hear well. It’s really a shame and they shouldn’t let fear stop them from getting the help they need to live life more fully.

Remind them that they don’t hesitate to get glasses to see better, why be reluctant to address a hearing loss?

If I can help with any aspect of the conversation, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Hearing Loss Doesn’t Have to Slow You Down

Hearing loss can be problematic in a number of ways. Not being able to hear shuts you out of conversations, makes it difficult to watch the telly, and can sometimes lead to social isolation. But we want you to know that things do not have to be this way. Hearing loss does not have to slow you down, as evidenced by the many people we help every day.

Need further proof? Then consider the example of an 80-year-old man from Plymouth considered to be Britain’s oldest disc jockey. Don Barker plays regular gigs in and around Plymouth to throngs of party goers and a group of about 30 fans who follow him to his shows. Don has age-related hearing loss, but that hasn’t slowed him down. He just uses a hearing aid.

Music has pretty much been Barker’s life since he left the Royal Navy to begin DJ work in 1977. Though he is known to play a variety of music as needs dictate, he focuses mainly on disco. Why? Because disco is something people can dance to. And for Barker, that’s what it’s all about. It is thrilling for him to spin his records and encourage people to get up off their bums and start jiving.

We understand that suffering from hearing loss can be a difficult thing. We know that people with normal hearing do not necessarily understand what it’s like to not be able to hear. But we also know that modern hearing aids can do wonderful things. Hearing loss does not have to slow you down; just ask Don Barker. You can still get out there and enjoy life to the fullest even if you don’t hear as well as you did when you were 20. And of course, disco is always on the table.

Silence Is No Answer to Hearing Loss

Have you ever wondered why older people are more likely to be isolated than their younger counterparts? It could be any number of reasons, but often the culprit is hearing loss. Older individuals who find they cannot hear have a tendency to withdraw because they are unable to converse or otherwise interact with others. They embrace a life of silence because they cannot hear and they don’t want to talk.

As hearing loss specialists, we want to remind our readers that silence is no answer to hearing problems. Not only does living in silence not help anything, it only leads to isolation and loneliness. The good news is that silence is not your only option.

New Hearing Aid Technologies Are Great

It used to be that hearing aid technologies only worked for certain people suffering from a specific kind of hearing loss. All they did was increase volume. As much as that helped some, it didn’t help others whose hearing loss had more to do with distinguishing between sounds than a lack of volume. New technologies have changed that.

There are now different kinds of hearing aids for different kinds of hearing problems. Don’t just assume a hearing aid will not help you without trying one first. It could be that modern digital technology has a solution that could restore your hearing sufficiently enough to allow you to lead the kind of life you used to lead.

Silence is no answer to hearing loss. Don’t allow a loss of hearing to take you into a place of silent isolation where you cannot hear and you are unwilling to speak. Get in touch with Darroch Hearing so we can help you find a solution. We offer hearing tests and hearing aids Glasgow and surrounding areas.

What Is a Digital Hearing Aid?

You may have noticed while browsing our website that we carry digital hearing aids. But do you know what they are? Do you know how a digital hearing aid differs from an older, analogue hearing aid? If not, we would like the opportunity to offer an explanation.

A digital hearing aid receives sound waves and, through computer technology, translates those sound waves into digital information that can be modified in any number of ways. Usually, the digital information is amplified before being passed on to the hearing aid’s speaker system. The advantage of digitisation is that it allows for amplification without any resulting distortion.

An analogue hearing aid processes sound waves as-is. In other words, there is no digital conversion. Sound waves are simply amplified by using an electronic device that increases the amplitude of the sound wave. While this technology was exciting in its day, it is no longer the best option in the 21st century. Amplification with an analogue hearing aid leads to distortion and other problems.

If you are suffering any kind of hearing loss, you might benefit from a digital hearing aids. The only way to know for sure would be to have a hearing test conducted by a professional. We invite you to contact us to take advantage of our free hearing test offer. If our test reveals a problem that could be helped with a digital hearing aid, we will be more than happy to walk you through all your options.

Digital hearing aids have helped make hearing loss less of a problem than it used to be. Hopefully, future technologies will make how we treat hearing loss even better than it is now.

Getting through the Festivities with Hearing Loss

The festive season can be a stressful time of year for people suffering from hearing loss. Between all the social gatherings and religious services, not being able to hear can put a real damper on things. Unfortunately, hearing loss can be just as hard on family members as it is the person who actually suffers from it.

If you will be entertaining a family member or two with hearing problems in Glasgow this holiday season, here are some tips that will help you make the best of your gatherings:
  • Face your loved one directly when speaking to him or her. Not only does this direct sound waves toward this person, but it also affords the opportunity to see your facial expressions and read your lips.
  • If you can, find a quiet and well-lit area to have your conversation. The less background noise, the easier it will be to talk. Adequate lighting will also help with facial expressions and lip reading.
  • Avoid shouting if your loved one can’t hear you. Shouting only distorts your words and annoys everyone else around you.
  • If your loved one doesn’t understand what you’re saying, try rephrasing your sentence. Don’t simply repeat it word-for-word. Sometimes people with hearing loss can identify some words but not others.
  • Don’t simply drop the conversation because you’re having trouble communicating. This only serves to make your loved one feel ashamed, isolated, and uninterested in social interaction.
Hearing loss can add unnecessary stress to the festive season. However, if you are willing to make an effort to accommodate your loved ones in conversation and other activities, things will be better for everyone.
